Alumni named to the Order of Canada and other alumni recognitions Read More

Seven alumni have been awarded the Order of Canada in recognition of their lifetime achievements. Henry J.M. Barnett (MD 1944) has been named a companion – the highest designation within the order – for his internationally renowned research in stroke prevention. Named officers of the order are Donald M. Deacon (BA 1940 VIC), past-president of the Prince Edward Island Red Cross and past-director of the Smartrisk Foundation; and former NDP leader Audrey McLaughlin (MSW 1970), who works extensively with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs to encourage peace and democracy in developing nations. Named members of the order are cough-syrup maker Frank C. Buckley (BCom 1942 St. Mike’s), who has helped lead organizations such as the Canadian Council on Drug Abuse and Catholic Family Services; Terrence M.J.S. Clifford (BSc 1961, MEd 1974), the founder of Global Vision International, which offers mentoring and educational opportunities for youth; Anne Golden (BA 1962 UC, PhD 1970), former president of the United Way of Greater Toronto; and Emöke J.E. Szathmáry (BA 1968 St. Mike’s, PhD 1974), the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Manitoba, who has provided significant leadership in the fields of post-secondary academic research and administration.

Flutist Stephen Tam U of T alumni won the top two awards in the 32nd CBC/Radio-Canada National Competition for Young Performers. Baritone Peter McGillivray (BA 2000 UC, Dip Op Perf 2003) earned first prize in the vocal category, as well as the Jean A. Chalmers Award and the People’s Choice Award. Flutist Stephen Tam (Mus Bac Per 1999) was awarded first in the brass/instrumental category.

Opera singer Measha Brueggergosman recently captured second place in Norway’s Queen Sonja International Music Competition, and earned the Troldhaugen Grieg Prize for the best interpretation of Edvard Grieg’s work.

In June, the University of Ottawa awarded an honorary doctorate to President Emeritus J. Robert S. Prichard (LLB 1975, LLD Hon. 2002). He was lauded for his success as president and CEO of Torstar Corporation (publisher of the Toronto Star and Harlequin Books) and for his “energetic leadership at the University of Toronto [which] has helped redefine the role of a university president in Canada today.”
