Don’t be fooled by the grand marble lobby or weekly maid service – the former hotel at 89 Chestnut Street is one of four new U of T student residences that opened in September. The university purchased the 28-storey Colony Hotel in February 2003 and converted it into a 1,100-bed residence to accommodate this year’s increased enrolment. The building includes study and common rooms, a fitness centre, pool, multi-faith prayer space and music practice rooms.
New College’s sparkling new nine-storey residence features public exhibition space, hidden gardens and room for 277 undergraduates and seven graduate dons. Designed by Saucier + Perrotte
Architectes Inc. of Montreal, it is at the corner of Willcocks Street and Spadina Avenue.
The new four-storey residence at U of T at Scarborough features 54 suites, each with four separate bedrooms, two bathrooms, two kitchens and a living room. The architectural firms Baird Sampson Neuert Architects Inc. and Montgomery Sisam Associates helmed the project.
Erindale Hall at U of T at Mississauga – also designed by Baird Sampson Neuert – houses up to 197 undergraduates. Canadian Architect magazine recognized the design with a 2002 Award of Excellence.
