UTSC Campaign Surpasses Goal

Scarborough campus raises more than $130,000 from staff and faculty Read More

Some said it couldn’t be done. But when Professor Kwong-loi Shun, the principal and vice-president of the University of Toronto at Scarborough, launched the first Faculty and Staff Campaign at the Scarborough campus, he was confident that his colleagues and co-workers would step up to his ambitious fundraising goal of $100,000.

In fact, more than $130,000 was raised to support scholarships and capital projects in five areas: the Centre for Neurobiology of Stress, the Management Building, the Academic Resource Centre, the Student Centre and arts initiatives such as the Doris McCarthy Gallery and student exhibition space.

Lenard Whiting, a UTSC lecturer in the music program and a choir director, made a $14,000 contribution to establish the Lawrence B. Leverington Mentor Award. The scholarship is named after Whiting’s music teacher and mentor – the former choir director at St. Alban’s Anglican Cathedral in Kenora, Ont., where Whiting was raised. “He was a brilliant lounge entertainer and inspiring music teacher throughout his entire career,” says Whiting.

The award will support a student enrolled in the second, third or fourth year of the visual and performing arts program at UTSC, who has demonstrated outstanding musical ability in direction, composition or performance.
