Physician established foundation to raise awareness about Fragile X Read More

Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson (BA 1960 TRIN, MA 1962) recently presented Dr. Carlo Paribello (BSc 1978 VIC) with a Meritorious Service Medal for his work with the Fragile X Research Foundation of Canada. Paribello and his wife, Barbara, of Brampton, Ont., founded the non-profit volunteer organization in 1997 after two of their four sons were diagnosed with the genetic disorder Fragile X. The foundation heightens awareness of Fragile X and raises research funds to find better treatments.

Dr. Akiko Iwasaki (BSc 1993 St. Mike’s, PhD 1998), an assistant professor at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., is the latest recipient of the Wyeth Vaccines Young Investigator Award in Vaccine Development. The grant, worth $60,000 over two years, will support her investigations into infection and immune responses in the female genital tract. Iwasaki’s research may ultimately contribute to the development of an effective vaccine against the herpes simplex virus.

Cheryl Tallan’s (BA 1957 UC) book The Jewish Publication Society Guide to Jewish Women: 600 BCE – 1900 CE was a finalist in the women’s study category of the 2003 National Jewish Book Awards. Written in collaboration with Emily Taitz and Sondra Henry, the book chronicles Jewish women’s experiences in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
