At the Hospital for Sick Children, physical therapist Jo-Anne Marcuz (MScPT 2003) is using Nintendo’s popular Wii video game system to help kids recovering from a broken bone or who have a chronic illness such as arthritis. Physiotherapy can be painful and some kids find it boring. The Wii, with its motion-sensitive controller, entices kids to move in ways that mimic traditional physical therapy exercises. It also distracts them from the task at hand – and that can mean faster improvement.
